Library and Computer Application

Computer is one of the most powerful tools to solve problems that involve in computation and data processing. Mechanization of library house-keeping (house-keeping means activities related to acquisition of library resources, classification, cataloging, resources circulation/issue & return, serial control, stock verification, resources maintenance etc.) operations and other activities predominantly done by computer is known as library automation. Library automation is also known as Library Management Software. Software may be package software or customizable software.

Library automation is used to refer to the use of computer to render of the routine/traditional works as well as some new technology oriented features of the modern library, such as:

1) Acquisition
2) Cataloging
3) Serial control
4) Circulation (borrowing & return)
5) Information retrieval
6) Automatic indexing
7) Resource sharing (through networks)
8) Online interactive system
9) Online catalog search for library holdings
10) Online reading of library resources/holdings

Again application of computer in library can be categorized to the following:

1) Supporting clerical functions which are related to technical and circulation work
2) Information storage, retrieval and dissemination
3) Supporting Management Information System (MIS) for library professionals, particularly in analyzing library statistics, preparing reports etc.

Computer application in library services makes the library more end-users friendly. It helps to provide services quickly to the users as well as saves times for both, users/information seekers and services providers.

Abstract

Abstract is a brief summary of a project (article/journal article/research article, thesis, review, research report, performance, service project, conference proceeding etc.) instead of full text paper/article that briefly describes the content and scope of project and identifies its (project’s) objective, methodology, finding, result and conclusion. Abstract appears at the beginning of a manuscript.

Abstract length may be varied by discipline and publisher’s requirement. Length of an abstract typically ranges from 100 to 500 words. Standard abstract consists with 100 to 150 words.

Part of an Abstract

Abstract is quite brief summary and should have the following sections/parts. Each section is typically a single sentence and there is room for extension.

1) Motivation
2) Statement of Problem/Research Issue
3) Approach/Method
5) Results/Findings and
5) Conclusion and Recommendation 

Writing an efficient abstract is very hard work. Efficient abstract helps people/readers to read one’s publication with increased interest. We have to include all the components of an efficient abstract.

A journal article is a publication/part of a journal which is published in a particular journal. Journal article usually has a moderate rigid structure that is determined by the particular journal. Journal article mostly follows format of abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion.
A journal article will include and follow:

1) A journal article states the result of original research work
2) A journal article is written by scholar, scientist, professional or other expert
3) A journal article is written for readers of scholar, scientist, professional or other expert
4) A journal article is peer-reviewed &
5) A journal article is published in a scholarly journal in format of  print/online or both (print & online)

In the area of sciences, a journal article is sometimes called a Scientific Article, a Peer-Reviewed Article or a Scholarly Research Article. Journal article in a particular field is often referred to as Literature altogether. Journal article is most often Primary Research Article. Journal article has different aim and requirement as well as a journal article describes a new tool or method.

Scholarly journal article is written by professional people who are specialized in specific fields.  It shows the new avenue in the society for development as well as human welfare.

Journal

A journal is a scholarly publication which contains articles, written by researcher, professor and other expert. Journal focuses on a specific discipline or field of study. Unlike newspaper and magazine, journal is intended for academic or technical readers, not general readers.

Most journal articles are followed:

1) Article is peer reviewed
2) Article has original research ground on specific discipline, sub discipline or field of study
3) Article focuses on current developments/development of existing article in new focus/area
4) Article cites other works and has bibliographies
5) Article/content (its quality) is controlled by an editor or an editorial board
6) Article is generally written with more technical language by expert in the subject
7) Article/journal can be print/ online or both in edition

Journal is published on a regular basis (as quarterly, biannually or annually) and is sequentially numbered. Each copy is an issue and a set of issues makes a volume (usually, each year is a separate volume and sometimes two volumes may be published in an issue for a particular reason). Like magazine and newspaper, journal is also called periodical or serial.

Periodical

Periodical is a serial publication with its own distinctive title which contains a mix of articles, editorials, reviews, columns, short stories, poems or other works, written by more than one contributor with an interval of less than a year.

Magazine

Magazine is a periodical with a popular focus, aiming the general public and it contains news, personal narratives, and opinions. Magazine uses vocabulary which is understandable to most people and often has lots of eye-catching illustrations. Magazine publishes advertisements to meet up it cost.
Academic Journal

An academic journal is a peer-reviewed periodical in which a particular scholarly article of academic discipline is published. Academic journal serves as forum for the introduction and presentation for scrutiny of new research and the critique of existing research. Content typically takes the form of articles presenting original research, review articles, and book reviews. Academic journal applies to scholarly publications in all fields.

Reading a journal article will lead a reader/researcher to a number of other journal articles on closely related with topics and researcher /reader can mark the citations that he/she is interested in. Next time he/she can find those articles to continue his/her search/research.

Travelling means that one goes from one place to another place or from one country to another country. There is wise saying that home keeping youths have ever homely wits. It means that a man who passes his life in one place and never leaves his place to visit other places or countries, has a narrow outlook. Man wants to go outsides and view famous cities, lakes, mountains, seas, rivers etc as well as he wants to know different nations, manner, custom, and religion. He also travels to get relief from dullness of life. So people travel for pleasure and education & knowledge.

Travelling is an essential part of education. It increases our knowledge, gives practical sense of places, people, things as well as broadens our mind and outlook.  Travelling helps us to understand Creator’s creations. World is full of many wonderful things and creatures. Travelling/visiting of them (minimum some) will give us an idea of Creator’s creations. It will impress us with the grandeur, vastness, majesty and wonder of Creator’s creations.

Travelling fosters understanding and enhances relations between Nations. Thus travelling is a great factor in the establishment of world peace which is very imperative and essential in the present world.

 All of us are fond of sports (more or less).Sports are considered as exercises and keep us physically fit. There are various types of exercise. Walking, swimming, racing, riding, rowing, wrestling , gymnastics etc. are good forms of exercise. Modern games, such as football, cricket, tennis, hockey etc. are types of healthy exercises/sports.

Sound mind is possible only in sound body. Value of sports is that they are an excellent media of recreations. Our daily routine works put a great strain on our energies. Sports give us fresh vigor and energy as well as make us forget of our anxieties and tensions.

Sports teach us coolness, courage and self control. Sports cultivate team sprit as a sense of comradeship/colleague/team work. Thus sports/exercises play an important role in giving us guidance and education. We should form a habit of partaking some kind of exercise on regularly. To live a happy life, we must build both our body and mind together through taking some exercises or sports.

Audio-Visual is combined word of audio and visual. Audio (auditory channel to listen information) and visual (channel or media to read/view information) can include charts, graphs, tables, maps, models, samples, diagrams, drawings, photographs etc. It means CD (Compact Disc) or DVD (Digital Video Disc) or both CD & DVD as well as visual.

Audio-Visual Material (AVM) refers to works with both, audio or sound and a visual component or use of such works. Movies and televisions shows are good examples of audio visual presentations. Business presentations are also usually audio visual in nature.

Multimedia (simply means involving several media or channels of communication) is media and content that utilizes a combination of different content forms. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms. Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices.


Education through Audio -Visual Material (AVM) is an instruction where particular attention is paid to the audio and visual presentation of the material with the goal of improving comprehension and retention.

Audio visual technology is developed gradually in sophisticated way and its uses become more widespread in educational establishment, such as school, college, university, library etc.

Audio visual technology provides vast amount of information to students, teachers, researchers and information seekers.

Information Literacy Program (IL Program) is means when and why a student/user needs information, where to find information and how to use information in an accurate and proper manner. Information literacy includes Library User Education (LUE), information skills training, education & development, or includes ‘Key Skills’ which are related to the use and management of information in area of higher education for learning, teaching and research.

IL Program & Library

Information Literacy (IL) is also defined and known by different names, such as:  Library Orientation, User Education, Bibliographic Instruction, Library user skills training and training etc. Library orientation concentrates on how to use Library’s holdings and resources (print and online & digital) for providing an easy access to the students/users to its reading materials and resources. Librarians/Information Professionals can help (formal/informal) students/users in developing/enhancing their use of library services and facilities.

Main purpose of Information Literacy is to enable students/users to seek information independently and use information appropriately.

Technical reading method is an attempt to increase rates of reading and grasp comprehension about the book within the short period of time. Reading Book Technically Program includes different techniques which will have to use/read for technical reading of books, such as:
